All I really want in this world is basic decency. Why should that be so naive and so impossible?
Basic decency entails:
- Kindness
- Good governance
- Minding your own business
- Respecting other people’s choices
- Believing that human dignity matters
- Acting accordingly with the five previous principles
Yeah, this is about politics, and if you fault me for that, it’s also about how we conduct ourselves professionally.
It’s also about what we put out into the various worlds around us. It’s also about marketing and whether we can stop thinking of people as targets and consumers.
Bigger picture, it’s about whether we can break out of the trance of delusional incentives. It’s about whether we can embrace people in the fullness of their humanity in everything we do, from ballot boxes to our homes and workplaces.
We absolutely can. It just takes making decency a priority.
