The Cost of Easy Gains

Yesterday I did an easy set of 120 kg back squats. Yes, I could use a forklift to lift 10 times that and more. And I’d be sitting down, too. So why should I bother?

Well, imagine someone offered you a device that would give you super strength, but would steadily decrease your ability to use your own muscles. Would you say yes? I wouldn’t.

Would you feel augmented or diminished by your growing weakness and degraded metabolic health? Would it be worth it if it got harder for you to get around on your own? I would feel like my life was worse, not better.

So…

“A new paper from researchers at Microsoft and Carnegie Mellon University finds that as humans increasingly rely on generative AI in their work, they use less critical thinking, which can ‘result in the deterioration of cognitive faculties that ought to be preserved.'”

Maybe something to think about. You know, while we still can.
